FAQs and Myth Busting

  • Truth: Agritourism is where agriculture and tourism meet. It includes farm stays, U-pick produce, animal encounters, harvest festivals, and more. It’s about experiencing real working farms and ranches—and learning where your food comes from.

  • Truth: Not at all. Agritourism starts with what you already know—your land, your animals, your story. Visitors are eager to learn and connect, and you set the pace. We have resources here to help you learn more about setting up your Agritourism business.

  • Truth: Insurance is simply a standard cost of doing business, and many Montana producers find it surprisingly affordable. Liability laws in Montana offer protection when you take reasonable safety steps—like waivers, signage, and clear visitor rules. Members of MAA can also take advantage of discounts on recommended signs.

  • Everything from farm tours and wine tastings to cooking classes, pumpkin patches, and animal experiences. It varies by season and location.

  • Truth: Rural charm is part of the appeal. Visitors are looking for off-the-beaten-path experiences. Plus, DMOs and local tourism groups are eager to help promote hidden gems like yours.

  • Check out Abundant Montana’s directory or connect with your local tourism office. Many farms are listed on regional travel sites and social media.

  • Truth: Agritourism happens year-round. Spring and summer bring planting and tours, fall is for harvest celebrations, and winter offers cozy experiences like holiday markets, baking workshops, and farm stays.

  • It provides new income for farms, educates the public about agriculture, and strengthens rural economies by supporting small businesses and local food systems.

  • Truth: With a little guidance—signage, orientation, and clear boundaries—most guests are respectful and curious. Safety is a shared responsibility. Our Association provides Active members with an annual ½ day “fresh eye” site visit, to review risks and opportunities for your site.
